We often hear the questions “Is cocoa healthy?” and “Can babies and children eat foods made with cocoa powder?”. The answer is that there are numerous health benefits of consuming organic cocoa and that it can be the perfect way to give your child a healthy treat.

Cocoa (cacao) is very high in catechins, which are polyphenols of the flavanol group, and which are believed to protect against heart disease, cancer, and various other medical conditions as well as improving blood pressure and glucose metabolism.

They may also protect your child’s skin from sun damage. Make sure that you use cocoa with at least 70% pure cocoa (preferably 100% and organic) and avoid cocoa processed with alkali, as this removes most of the flavonoids.

Cocoa is also an excellent source of Magnesium, which is known to relieve PMS symptoms in women, relax muscles, promote healthy cardiovascular health and even regulate insulin levels, thus protecting against Diabetes. Magnesium also improves blood flow and improves the function of heart vessels in older people.

Cocoa can also be high in copper, which can inhibit the uptake of certain flavonoids, so anyone with high copper levels should avoid cocoa. Cocoa should always be eaten in moderation and as part of a healthy diet.
