Every mother needs a good homemade apple sauce recipe at her disposal: it’s one of the best first tastes and is super versatile. Small babies can eat this as a puree, whilst older children and the rest of the family can eat it in a variety of ways: as a puree, as a sauce to accompany meat or even as a sugar-free jam on a slice of toast or chilled as a yogurt topping.
As a bonus, the smell of cinnamon and apples baking or cooking will fill the house with a delicious aroma.
Recipe tips
Use cinnamon with care when giving it to your baby for the first time. Cinnamon can provoke an allergic reaction, so watch out for any redness around the mouth.
Ingredients:
10 ripe organic apples with peel removed, cored and sliced
1 cinnamon stick *optional*
Method
1. Place apples and cinnamon stick (if using) in a large oven safe dish with a lid.
2. Bake covered at 180°C/350°F for 80-90 minutes.
3. Leave to cool, then mash apples with a vegetable masher or puree for smaller babies.
4. Serve as a puree, on a slice of toast or chill for one hour and add as a topping to yogurt.
