I’ve been wanting to make a cucumber crocodile for ages after having seen something similar in some magazine, so an invitation to an animal themed 3rd birthday party was the perfect opportunity to create this very cool looking yet totally healthy snack! This croc requires a little bit of patience when carving the teeth, but I promise the outcome will be worth it.
Recipe tips
Since this recipe uses a lot of toothpicks, adult supervision is required especially for smaller kids when devouring the crocodile.
Ingredients
1 cucumber
200 g (1 1/3 c) plum tomatoes
1/4 orange pepper
1/2 green pepper
small block of cheese (approx 80 g)
2 radishes
1 black olive *optional*
toothpicks
Method
1. Wash all your vegetables.
2. Cut into the cucumber about 1/3 way in and carve out the bottom and top teeth in a zigzag fashion.
3. Cut the green pepper into 4 slices and slide under the cucumber to resemble front and back legs.
4. Cut cheese into small triangles. Pin one tomato and one piece of cheese on each toothpick and insert onto the crocodile’s back and sides.
5. Peel the two radishes half-way and pin into the head as the croc’s eyes. If using, cut two small circles out of the black olive using a straw, and stick them onto the eyes as pupils.
6. Cut a long slice out of the orange pepper and stick it into the crocodile’s jaw as its tongue.
7. Cover and keep refrigerated until serving.
